Utrecht City Theatre: A Shimmering Reflection of Artistic Quality

Edenspiekermann Amsterdam's Unique Corporate Identity Design

The Utrecht City Theatre is more than just a performance venue. It is a place where engagement, adventure, passion, and skill converge to create a sparkling and emotional journey for both performers and visitors. This journey often leads to reflective moments, and it is this unique characteristic that Edenspiekermann Amsterdam sought to capture in their design.

The design team, led by Edo van Dijk and including Earik Wiersma, Hannah Manneke, Carmen Nutbey, Jenny Labaar, Arjan van Zeumeren, and Jan Dirk Porsius, embarked on this project in the spring of 2008. The visual identity was launched in June 2009, and the team continues to work on seasonal changes in the identity system.

The custom typeface and logo are based on the words “shimmering” and “reflection”. This choice of inspiration is not arbitrary; it is a deliberate attempt to encapsulate the theatre's essence. The typography and color scheme are a nod to the zeitgeist of Dudok, the architect of the theatre building. The edgy play of letters positions the theatre self-consciously in the present time, allowing the style to grow into a powerful cultural brand.

This unique approach to design did not go unnoticed. In 2011, the design was awarded Platinum in A' Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design Award. This prestigious award recognizes world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative designs that showcase unmatched professionalism and contribute to societal wellbeing. The award is given to designs that define the aesthetics of an era, advancing the boundaries of art, science, design, and technology, and making the world a better place.
